My example
to show how this is destroying our society is the recent tragedy in which a
cruise ship crashed off the coast of Italy. From the very beginning the media
looked at the captain as the one person who should be blamed for this. Now as
the days have gone by more and more evidence has been presented by the media
showing how the captain of the ship made mistakes and cause a catastrophic
accident.
My issue
with this is not the fact that the captain may have been in the wrong but due
to the coverage all the information presented to us has a negative feel aimed
directly at one man. Now I am not going to dispute that the buck stops at the
top and he was in charge of the boat, but I cannot help thinking that it takes
1000 crew to run the ship, surely included in these 1000 people are other
people who help manage the route the ship takes, navigators etc. also a ship of
this size surely has some kind of sonar or under water radar, I don’t know as I
have never worked on the bridge of a ship but I am using common sense to make
an assumption. So with this in mind surely the route taken was a team effort
and not just one man’s crazy manoeuvre (or so the media would have you
believe). Next thing I expect to hear from the press is they have nicknamed the
captain “Crazy Ivan” after the manoeuvre from the film “Hunt for Red October”.
So in
conclusion should we all not stop trying to find someone to blame, should we
not wait for all the facts before assuming someone is in the wrong, it’s time
we all stood up and took responsibility for our mistakes and spent the time
saved in trying to put things right, also lets not be so quick to jump on the
bandwagon pointing at the accused and let’s wait until they are either found
guilty or innocent.
